Rainy Wedding Days Are Still Beautiful - Here’s How To Make The Most Of Them!

If you’re getting married in the Winter, or even the Spring, you’ve probably prepared for the Alanis Morrisette eventuality…

Rain on your wedding day. Not guaranteed, but incredibly likely.

Hell, if you’re getting married in the UK during any season you’re risking unpredictable weather. C’est la vie.

So what do you do if the heavens do open on your big day? How do you pre-plan for a potential downpour? And how do you stop it from ruining your photos?

Rain on your wedding day might not be part of your dream, but it actually can create unique and stunning photo opportunities.

Embrace that rain. You have no choice!

Rainy day photos can be incredibly romantic. Imagine the two of you under an umbrella or dancing in the drizzle. Ooh er, it's like a scene from a movie! Be open to the idea that rain can add character and uniqueness to your photos, instead of just being annoying.

Rain puddles even create natural mirrors that can make for striking compositions. Let your photographer incorporate the rain and clouds into wide shots for a dramatic, moody atmosphere. Wind can create beautiful movement in your veil or dress. Overcast skies create soft, diffused lighting, which is flattering for portraits. Your photographer can take advantage of this lighting for close-ups and intimate moments. Lean into it!

Umbrellas can be part of the vision.

Bring clear umbrellas or ones that match your wedding theme. These not only keep you dry but also look amazing in photos. Provide some for guests and the wedding party, too!

Seek shelter.

I’m assuming you haven’t planned too much outside stuff, but if you have - venues usually offer a weather contingency anyway. Scout out covered areas like a gazebo or overhang for any outdoor pictures you want. Look for creative options like greenhouses, barns, or buildings with large windows for natural light.

Brief your photographer.

Discuss indoor photo options ahead of time. Most photographers are prepared for rain and have creative ideas for alternate locations or setups. Flexibility and communication are key.

Truthfully, a cheerful attitude can make all the difference. Rain can create fun, spontaneous moments that you’ll cherish forever. Some cultures even view rain on a wedding day as a sign of good luck!

A little rain doesn’t have to dampen your day. I’ve been to plenty of happy (and fun) weddings where the rain has made an appearance. It can make your wedding even more memorable! Trust your photographer to work their magic and turn the weather into an artistic element of your story.

Those are my tips. You can always reach out to me if you’re planning a wedding and need a painfully optimistic photographer who can make the most out of any situation.
